Cristina Marquez is a Mexican-American artist who was born and raised in Indiana. She earned degrees in Art History and Painting at the University of Saint Francis Fort Wayne before moving to Chicago, where she lives and works today. Her work explores what it means to walk queerness as a spiritual path, focusing on the everyday things that shape our shared humanity and contemplating the surreal nature
of our current reality. Drawing from life, art history and fantasy, Cristina’s paintings are rooted in the timelessness of painting and its ability to capture and translate ephemeral truths.

1. My parents relocated to the US for economic reasons, because my father worked for the railroad. He would travel here seasonally to work until my parents got married and they decidedto relocate permanently.
2. Growing up first generation for me felt quite alienating. I felt a feeling of not fully belonging to any of the communities I was a part of.
4. As I’ve gotten older my relationship to my culture and my roots has deepened. It feels complexand dynamic but only gets more firm with age.
5. I have hope that our willingness to learn from and understand one another will deepen. I havedreams of building a stronger understanding of my culture.
